After Pierre Hadot showed that philosophy experienced as spirituality existed in classical ancient periods, Kramer shows that philosophy, experienced as a chance for communal life, existed even later, until it started being demanded to professionals. In this sense Kramer’s work is of fundamental importance. However, after the historical research, he describes the principles of such communities, according to his metaphysical mind, in a too schematic way, based on a structure of systems. The book is anyway of high value for those who want to understand how the practice of philosophy meant as spirituality has evolved over time.
