The setting sun now dies away
and darkness comes at close of day;
your brightest beams, dear spirit, impart,
and let them shine within our heart.

We praise your breath with joy this night:
please watch and guide us till the light;
joining the music of the blest,
o life, we sing ourselves to rest.

To the living revelation in our hearts,
who comes from us and spreads to all,
spirit of comfort and love,
spirit whom we intimately honour,
be memory, attention
and growth evermore.

This hymn is an adaptation from Geoffrey Laycock, who in turn adapted the Latin hymn “Iam sol recedit igneus” ascribed to St. Ambrose.
